Florida Senate Passed Teddy Bridgewater Act to help K-12 Coaches and their Athletes

Apparently, good things can happen when a person uses their fame and fortune to make life easier for those with less. That’s what an NFL player did for the athletes he coached in high school. As it turned out, many other coaches didn’t want him using his own resources to help the kids. They were so angry about it that they went to certain authorities to complain about it. Which led to a suspension for the guy just trying to help others. Well now the Florida Senate has passed the Teddy Bridgewater Act to help K-12 coaches and their athletes.

With the passing of the Teddy Bridgewater Act the hope is that it will help coaches to give the athletes assistance with food, transportation and recovery services. Under the new Act coaches will have to report their spending to the Florida High School Athletic Association. And they will have to make sure that any personal funds used are not considered impermissible benefits. High school coaches will be able to use up to $15,000 of personal funds to support student athletes.

The Act had to be signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who weighed in on the subject:

He got into this situation where he was paying for meals and rides for some of his players who were underprivileged and he was using his personal funds to do this,” DeSantis said at a news conference before signing the bill, which made its way through committees and the Florida House and Senate, with every vote unanimous in support. “These were people that he was mentoring and that somehow got him suspended because of the way the rules were written.”

Beside the governor signing, it also was unanimously signed by the state’s Senate, collecting 38 votes. It was passed by the Florida House of Representatives. Hence it was lastly signed by Governor DeSantis. This bill came about after Bridgewater was suspended by his alma mater Miami Northwestern High School. They took exception to his spending out of his own pocket to help the school’s football team.

It can easily sound somewhat ridiculous that a school would begrudge any athletes getting help such as food, transportation and recovery efforts. However, Bridgewater understood the issues having once been in that situation himself. Therefore, he did the honorable and necessary thing by reaching back to help out. And unfortunately was suspended for his efforts.

Nevertheless, it is very nice to see this situation develop into a happy ending. Furthermore, we’re happy for Bridgewater setting an excellent example for his students. Congratulations to Teddy Bridgewater for blazing a trail of philanthropy we can all follow!
