San Diego Padres Become First Visiting Team to Win 1-0 at Coors Field in 20 Years

In Baseball, when someone mentions Coors Field; you often think home runs. You think high scoring games that look like a NFL team played. You wouldn’t naturally think someone could get a victory there with just one run. Yet, that is exactly what occurred Tuesday evening. The San Diego Padres became the first visiting team to win a game 1-0 at Coors Field in 20 years. This was just the 12th 1-0 game in Coors Field history, and the first by a visiting team since 2006.

Yes… ONE RUN got the job done at Coors! It’s a pitchers nightmare. Since one meatball over the plate can absolutely annihilate an ERA. However, both starting pitchers in Tuesday’s matchup had solid outings. San Diego’s Randy Vasquez went seven innings (no walks) with only giving up three hits. The Padres relievers (Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon) were able to hold the diminutive lead and without having to utilize SD’s stellar closer, Mason Miller.

As for the Rockies, they kept the Padres to just one score. And San Diego got it in an “unconventional” manner. In the sixth inning, Jake Cronenworth doubled, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled, and Manny Machado drew a bases-loaded walk to score the only run. But a win is a win and now the Padres have tied the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB standings. Which should make for some good rivalry games when these two NL West teams face each other during the month of May.

Nevertheless, if you’re wondering why baseballs soar and fly like Superman all over Coors Field, it’s due to several natural environmental factors. For instance, Coors Field’s high home run rate is primarily driven by its 5,200-foot altitude, where thin air creates roughly 20% less air resistance (drag) than at sea level, allowing fly balls to travel 5 to 10% farther. This low air density also reduces pitch movement; thus leading to more contact.

Additionally, Denver’s arid climate keeps balls dry. Moisture adds more weight to baseballs. Therefore, dry baseballs in Denver’s region will naturally travel further than in higher humidity. A very cool lesson in physics when you’re watching a Rockies game.
