New York Mets Reach 12-Game Losing Streak—Franchise’s Longest Since 2002

Things are starting pretty ugly for New York this season. They are under .500 and they have hit a low that hasn’t been seen by the ball club in over 20 years. The New York Mets reach a 12-game losing streak which is the franchise’s longest since 2002.

Yes, this moment has been over two decades in the making. And something has to be done in order to stop the bleeding. In the Mets defense, they have been without their star player. Their $765 million dollar man, Juan Soto.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan alluded to this particular aspect of the Mets situation by stating,

“The Mets lost their 12th straight after blowing a three-run lead. They didn’t get a hit over the final five innings. At 7-16, they are tied for the worst record in MLB. There is ugly, and then there is this.

Juan Soto is expected to return tomorrow. That’s a start at least.”

Soto has not played since suffering a right calf strain on April 3. At the time of his April 3 injury, Soto had hit safely in all eight of his games and was slashing .355/.412/.516 with a homer and two doubles. The Mets could really use his bat back in their lineup.

Nevertheless, it’s not all doom and gloom for New York. Still plenty of time to figure things out and get back on track for a potential postseason appearance. And other teams have done it. Case in point, just last season.

The Guardians completed a historic, record-setting comeback in MLB history. Reaching the postseason after overcoming a 15.5-game deficit in the American League Central division during the summer, ultimately finishing with a 19-4 run. They clinched the AL Central title on September 28, 2025, after a staggering 17-5 September surge.

The other day, Passan also discussed the history of bad starts in baseball. He writes,

“Four teams in MLB history have lost 10 or more games in a row and made the playoffs. The last was the Guardians in 2025. Only one of those teams had a skid in April and still made the postseason: the 1951 Giants, who lost 11 consecutive..

The New York Mets have lost 10 straight.”

So then, it’s not impossible. It’s not out of the question. However, it is quite the uphill battle. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if the Mets can make history this season and mount a comeback for the ages.
