Victor Wembanyama Leaves Game Due to Concussion as Portland Defeats Spurs in Game 2

The game had been tight. It had been extremely physical. And in such a playoff environment and atmosphere the Spurs unfortunately lost their star player for the rest of Tuesday evening’s matchup. San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama leaves the game due to a concussion as Portland defeats the Spurs in Game 2.

Wembanyama took a hard fall chasing a loose ball in the opening half, with his head slamming onto the court. Victor at first appeared to be “knocked out” but eventually began to move. He attempted to sit up as teammates such as Stephon Castle approached him to check on him. But eventually Wemby ran off the court towards the locker room and was promptly examined by medical staff.

During the unfortunate incident, Wembanyama was trying to make a move to the basket with Trail Blazers guard Jrue Holiday defending him. Wembanyama was fouled, lost his balance and fell forward, remaining on the ground for several seconds. In time, Victor Wembanyama was ruled OUT for the remainder of Game 2. And then entered concussion protocol after taking the hard fall.

The National Basketball Association has laid out a mandatory protocol to be followed in order to protect players and ensure proper recovery. The protocol states,

“If a player is suspected of having a concussion, or exhibits the signs or symptoms of a concussion, he must be removed from participation by either a team physician, or an athletic trainer for the player’s team, and undergo evaluation in a quiet, distraction-free environment conducive to conducting a neurological evaluation. Prior to a player being allowed to return to game participation, the evaluating physician (or athletic trainer) is required to review video to assess mechanism.”

Wemby had looked stellar thus far during the postseason. In the Spurs’ Game 1 win over the Trail Blazers on Sunday, Victor scored 35 points. Additionally, the 22-year-old was also just named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year on Monday, becoming the first player in league history to unanimously win the award.

Therefore, this is a tough development for San Antonio, however, the team has experience playing without their star player. Wembanyama missed 18 games during the regular season, including all three of San Antonio’s games against the Trail Blazers. The Spurs had a 12-6 record without him in the lineup. So then, if there is a roster in the league that can overcome this situation and move forward in the playoffs, it is the San Antonio Spurs.

However, in Game 2 the Spurs fell just short. Losing to the Trail Blazers by three points, 106-103. The series is now tied 1-1, and these two dynamic teams will play again on Friday.
