New York continues to work towards being a stronger competitor and contender for a title. They hired Baltimore’s former head coach and are now keeping him paired with the general manager he hit off with expeditiously. On Thursday it was confirmed that the New York Giants and GM Joe Schoen have agreed to terms on a multi-year extension in order for Schoen to continue working with John Harbaugh.
NFL insider, Mike Garafolo helped break the news regarding Joe Schoen’s extension. Garafolo reported,
“The New York Giants have signed GM Joe Schoen to a multi-year contract extension, securing his future alongside new HC John Harbaugh.
Joe Schoen was the only one on the plane that went down and picked up John Harbaugh on the day he visited the Giants’ facility. They hit it off then and throughout the free-agent and Draft process. Schoen now gets a deal to keep him working alongside the coach he helped land.”
NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport added,
“The Giants and GM Joe Schoen have agreed to terms on a multi-year extension to keep him working with John Harbaugh for years to come, per me and Mike Garafolo. After a successful offseason, including the work during the NFL Draft, Schoen is rewarded with a new deal. The Giants have always planned for Joe Schoen to work with John Harbaugh for the foreseeable future. Now, it’s official.”

There had been some speculation and minor rumblings that the Giants could move on from Joe Schoen after the draft. Instead, they now extend him. Harbaugh has made it crystal clear: he enjoys working with Joe Schoen. Schoen recruited Harbaugh heavily and helped get him to the New York organization. Now Joe will extend his time and tenure as well with the franchise.
Furthermore, as Paul Schwartz sums up these developments as a journalist who has covered the Giants since 1994, he states, “Schoen and John Harbaugh did not have a relationship before Harbaugh was hired as head coach. Clearly, Harbaugh sees a Giants future together with Schoen. Huge vote of confidence from Harbaugh and Giants ownership.”
