Vikings Elevating Odell Beckham Jr From Practice Squad—In Time For New Orleans Homecoming

Things seem to be moving right along for OBJ and Minnesota. The Vikings are elevating WR Odell Beckham Jr from the practice squad prior to Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Thus, providing some added depth and insurance with two top WRs questionable.

On Saturday afternoon the Vikings made the official announcement stating,

“The Vikings have elevated WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Jeshaun Jones to the active roster for tomorrow’s game.

C Michael Jurgens and TE Ben Yurosek have been activated from IR and will enter tomorrow’s game without an injury designation.”

NFL insider, Jordan Schultz added,

“Sources say Odell Beckham Jr. has quickly picked up the Vikings’ offense and has developed a good connection with Kyler Murray as well. It’s a pretty cool homecoming for OBJ, who grew up in New Orleans.”

So then, OBJ returns home for his Vikings debut at the Superdome. This development comes just days after Minnesota signed the veteran wide receiver to the practice squad. Pairing Beckham Jr. with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson in Minnesota.

Odell Beckham Jr said Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell called him as soon as he was released by the Giants. HC Kevin O’Connell was the Rams OC when Odell Beckham Jr. was in Los Angeles, and they won a Super Bowl together. Nevertheless, Odell felt value from what he can do with O’Connell in Minnesota, despite having other options on the table. OBJ recounts,

“It seemed as if he wanted me to be here. It always feels better when you’re doing it for somebody where it feels like their heart is there for it.”

While OBJ’s status has been elevated to the 53 man roster, it is still to be determined if he will play during Sunday’s game at New Orleans. But there is a good possibility he’ll see some action. And the Vikings are still happy to have him as an available option. Minnesota’s recent move with Odell provides them insurance with both Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison listed as questionable.

Despite a 4-0 start, the Minnesota offense has needed some juice. And OBJ will try to help bring that. His relationship with Justin Jefferson is a plus, as well. Odell Beckham Jr. will wear No. 9 for the Vikings, previously worn by J.J. McCarthy before he was traded to the Giants.

Odell Beckham Jr. on why he chose No. 9 in Minnesota: “I already joked…The reason I picked 9 is because Justin [Jefferson-No. 18] got half his game from me.”
