Vikings Are Trading Former First-Round QB JJ McCarthy to New York Giants
They drafted him high just two years ago. But now Minnesota is already moving on. The Vikings are trading former first-round QB JJ McCarthy to the New York Giants.
New York definitely has a need for another quarterback. Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a severe left knee injury during a Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Dart sustained damage to his left MCL, PCL, and meniscus, with the meniscus tear requiring full repair. His ACL remained intact. Furthermore, coach John Harbaugh confirmed last Wednesday afternoon that Dart would also undergo season-ending surgery.
Jaxson having to exit stage right due to injury has resulted in Jameis Winston being thrust into full-time duty for Harbaugh’s club. However, Winston has been a part of the New York formula that has them with a winning record. Giants are now 2-1 for the season. And in the NFC East that is good enough for second place right behind the Eagles.
However, New York would like to stay on the positive side of .500 and shore up their QB room. Hence this early season trade. Regarding McCarthy being moved, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports,
“BREAKING: The Vikings are trading QB JJ McCarthy to the Giants, per sources.
The Giants’ addition of JJ McCarthy is viewed as a move to bolster the backup position behind Jameis Winston, not to supplant him. New York did not feel confident in its options behind Winston and could not afford to go another 15 games without upgrading at QB2.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter added a few comments after Schultz report. Schefter says,
“JJ McCarthy was coached by Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and now will be coached by John Harbaugh in the NFL with the Giants.
The Giants had a chance to take JJ McCarthy in the 2024 NFL Draft but selected Malik Nabers at No. 6. Two years later, McCarthy lands in New York, joining Jameis Winston in the Giants’ QB room.”
Senior NFL reporter Albert Breer finishes rounding out the full picture of this trade development mentioning, “Giants coach John Harbaugh obviously has good background on JJ McCarthy from his brother—even got to see a few of McCarthy’s games at Michigan from the sideline. Still just 23, McCarthy will come in to back up Jameis Winston initially, and we’ll see where it goes from there. The Giants are sending a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Vikings for JJ McCarthy, per sources. They have an extra sixth-rounder already, from the Daniel Faalele trade.”
