Jalen Duren Still Declining Pistons $200M Offer and Won’t Attend Media Day or Start of Training Camp
Time is really dwindling. This saga has extended and pressed on for quite awhile and now the Detroit center’s deadline for qualifying offer acceptance is on Thursday. With just days to go, neither party is budging. The Pistons Jalen Duren is still declining the Pistons’ 5-year, $200M offer; and he will not attend media day or the start of training camp.
Shams Charania confirmed the reports of Duren choosing to go MIA this week. Shams says,
“All-NBA center Jalen Duren is not attending Detroit Pistons media day Monday nor the start of training camp, declining the team’s five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed offer in restricted free agency so far, sources tell ESPN. The sides remain at a stalemate ahead of Thursday deadline on a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer.”

The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Hunter Patterson has been following Jalen’s stalemate situation with the Detroit Pistons all summer. Regarding the latest incidents, Amick and Patterson reveal,
“Without a deal for the coming season — either an agreed-upon new contract or accepting the qualifying offer — Duren would not technically be part of Detroit’s roster and thus not have had been scheduled to take part in media duties. But per league sources, he considered visiting the team’s facility as a show of support to teammates and the franchise. The choice to be absent, the sources said, would be the latest sign of acrimony in these long-lasting negotiations.
League sources said there was no change in the talks — either for the team increasing its offer or Duren showing a willingness to take the most recent one. The Pistons are able to extend the qualifying offer deadline unilaterally, but it is unclear if they have any plans of doing so. Duren, who was also named an All-Star during his breakout 2025-26 regular season, is eligible for a five-year, $287 million deal.”
So then, for the time being things seem to continue to be strained. The lack of agreement is about more than just money. Duren feels there’s been a bit of disrespect shown. While Duren’s playoff struggles, an apparent Pistons concern about his weight and luxury tax concerns are clearly the driving forces behind Detroit’s reluctance. With the season approaching we will soon find out how this matter is resolved.
