New England Patriots Have Problems to Solve After Being Trounced by Jacksonville Jaguars
When they played in the Super Bowl back in February, they did not look good. Quarterback Drake Maye struggled and left people wondering if the bright lights of the biggest football game were too much for him. However, that question seems inadequate now after Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season. It’s not just Maye who looks lost. The New England Patriots have problems to solve after being trounced by the Jacksonville Jaguars yesterday.
First of all, the Patriots are thin on depth. They played without star WR A.J. Brown, starting RG Mike Onwenu, top edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones, starting S Craig Woodson, and promising rookie TE Eli Raridon. But even with so many guys out, the Patriots lacked a competitive spirit against the Jaguars. Even head coach Mike Vrabel expressed his concerns about the team after the game:
“My concern level is very high for this football team,” Vrabel said post-game. “I just wanna coach and improve. I think that’s the biggest thing when you come off a game like that. You just wanna get back and work.”
Besides, all the turnovers Maye has committed, seven so far this season in three games, he also appears to not be making good decisions. He even seems unsure of himself when making passes. High-level quarterbacks are known for being able to analyze situations quickly and make the right decision. But Maye appears to be struggling in that area. He made the following comment in his post-game presser:
“We can’t get out of our own way and I can’t get out of my own way, personally. I gotta look at myself in the mirror and take this as a turning point. It’s Week 3,” Maye said following Sunday’s loss. “What we are doing out there offensively is unacceptable.”

They also need more from their wide receivers. With A.J. Brown out, their best catchers are Mack Hollins and Pop Douglas. The offensive line has been decimated. They were down to their third-string right guard after veteran Greg Van Roten left the game after 20 plays. Even their second-year kicker Andy Borregales missed a 38-yard field goal.
Currently, they do not look like a team that just went to the Super Bowl. Some felt that they only made it to the game because they had an easy schedule. Yet it appears to be more complicated than a scheduling conflict. Can head coach Vrabel get his team turned around? Can offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, get in Maye’s head and straighten him out? These questions will have to be answered quickly. They face the undefeated Buffalo Bills in Week 4 next Sunday.
