New York Liberty Defeated Las Vegas Aces in WNBA 2026 Commissioner’s Cup Championship
New York City is well known around the world for its bright lights, delicious food and making money. However, sports have suddenly become a big thing too. First the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in 5 games of the NBA Finals. Then Gotham FC brought up the Challenger’s Cup trophy. Now the New York Liberty has defeated the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA 2026 Commissioner’s Cup Championship.
Things got off on the wrong foot for the Aces as they were without A’ja Wilson. She suffered an ankle injury over the weekend. That was unfortunate because without her the Aces floundered on defense. But the Liberty were still missing Satou Sabally due to being in concussion protocol. And they welcomed back Sabrina Ionescu who had been struggling with back and ankle injuries. So with all the different injury issues both teams would have to step up to the challenge.
Jackie Young answered the challenge for the Aces putting up 31 points. Joining her was Chennedy Carter who helped keep the Aces in the game with 18 points. But Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu was not to be outdone. Posting 26 points and five assists on 5-of-13 from deep, all team-highs. The 3-pointers also got the crowd hyped up especially since she was going against the tough defense of Jackie Young. Her 3-pointer with 17 seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter was a beauty. Additionally, Ionescu was joined by Breanna Stewart and Pauline Astier who were also living in the paint. Again, the Aces not having Wilson on the court left them floundering somewhat defensively.

Both teams were trying to become the first team to win the Commissioner’s Cup for the second time. However, Breanna Stewart added another chapter to her legendary résumé Tuesday night, becoming the first player in WNBA history to win the Commissioner’s Cup MVP award twice. And with the Liberty getting the victory, it also gave Stewart her third Commissioner’s Cup championship.
This game won’t count toward regular-season standings or stats but now the Liberty can at least claim bragging rights. And the $30,00 for each player of the winning team isn’t bad either. The Aces will get $10,000 per player as the losing team. Since Breanna Stewart won the Commissioner’s Cup MVP trophy she earned an additional bonus of $10,000.
So, in the end the Liberty took the victory over the Aces 93-85 to win on Tuesday night. Congratulations to the New York Liberty for getting the big W in the WNBA!
