Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers Are Showing Interest in Trey Murphy III
As the NBA Finals inch closer towards their conclusion, many teams are starting to look at improving rosters for next season. Yes, they will grab some fresh talent in the draft, but there are plenty athletic gems throughout the league that would make great additions for many organizations. Case in point, the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers are showing interest in Trey Murphy III.
Next season, the Pacers will have their star player, Tyrese Haliburton back in action. Back in April Haliburton had progressed to playing 5-on-5 basketball. Now he is expected to be a “full go” for the Indiana Pacers’ summer minicamp, putting him on track to return for the start of the 2026-27 season. Nevertheless, the team would love to get Tyrese more help after coming so close to hoisting a trophy in 2025.
The Pistons would like to get back to championship contention as well. Detroit has won three championships in the past, but can’t seem to put all the needed pieces together just yet. Despite securing the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-2026 season, they were eliminated in May after a Game 7 loss in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Therefore, now the Pacers and Pistons are looking for a roster piece that can be real difference maker. According to Marc Stein,
“League sources say that the Pelicans have not offered Murphy anywhere and that this is the first time their new front office regime headed by Joe Dumars has been truly willing to field offers for Murphy. As one team interested in Murphy put it to me this week: ‘They want a lot.’ Two teams known to have expressed interest in the 25-year-old sharpshooter, I’m told, are Detroit and Indiana.”
While New Orleans had previously rebuffed interest from many teams for years for Trey, they now have set an extremely high asking price to meet this summer. Furthermore, Bill Simmons believes there are two other teams that might throw their hats in the mix as well. Last week of May, Simmons revealed, “Boston and OKC are potential landing spots for Trey Murphy III. We assume he’s probably going to get traded over the next three weeks. I think Boston is a possibility. We thought whoever lost this matchup (Spurs and Thunder) is a possibility. You have two to three weeks to trade for someone like that.”
