We are so excited for the upcoming inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League. There are four teams that will compete, facing off against each other through a span of 30 games spread across the regular season and postseason. However, if you want to see history play out as women’s baseball triumphantly returns to the sports scene after 70 years; you may have to do a little travel. This August, the Women’s Pro Baseball League will play at the historic Robin Roberts Stadium.
The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) was officially announced on October 21, 2025. At that time, the league revealed its first four inaugural teams. These teams would eventually be located in: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Boston. However, for now the young league will represent those sports towns; but play all their games in one location in Illinois.
Furthermore, following the initial October launch, the league subsequently conducted its first virtual draft in November 2025. The WPBL also thrillingly announced the official team names and branding in July 2026. Ahead of the league’s debut in early August. Now all that is left, is for these four teams to begin play. And they will do so in a state quite entrenched and enthralled with America’s favorite pastime.
Robin Roberts Stadium is a legacy-filled baseball stadium in Springfield, Illinois. Located at Lanphier Park; known for hosting the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes and other baseball events. Furthermore, the Robin Roberts venue has a capacity of around 5,200-6,000. It also features a unique “turtleback” field. The stadium hosts both collegiate and professional baseball, as well as concerts and community events. Affiliates of the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Browns have all taken to the field of Robin Roberts.
However, if the term “turtleback field” has you in state of wonderment; no worries. It just refers to the overall design. A turtleback field means the infield is elevated with a steep downslope at the edge of the dirt to the outfield. In addition, with this configuration, the pitcher’s mound is the highest point on the field. There are only a handful of turtleback fields that are still used throughout the country. Thus, adding to the unique charm of the ballpark.
