Women’s Pro Baseball League Announce WPBL Co-Founder Justine Siegal as League’s First Commissioner
Another big day and step for the WPBL! A commissioner has at long last been appointed to help guide this new league to new heights. The Women’s Pro Baseball League announced WPBL Co-Founder Justine Siegal as the League’s first Commissioner.
To confirm the exciting news the WPBL released an official press release. It states,
“The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) announced today that it has named women’s baseball pioneer, and WPBL Co-founder, Justine Siegal, as the League’s first Commissioner. Siegal, a world-renowned coach and executive with over two decades of experience breaking baseball’s gender barriers, her career includes becoming the first woman to coach a professional men’s team and the first to throw batting practice for Major League Baseball (MLB).
As the WPBL’s Commissioner, Siegal will manage the League’s baseball operations, oversee player relations and staff development. In addition, Siegal will guide the League’s strategic direction, support revenue growth, and serve as a global ambassador.
A career defined by a series of unprecedented milestones, in 2009 Siegal became the first woman to coach a professional men’s baseball team with the Brockton Rox. Following this in 2011, Siegal was the first woman to throw batting practice for MLB teams including the Cleveland Guardians (then Indians), Athletics, and Cardinals. In 2015, Siegal was hired by the Oakland Athletics as the first female coach in an MLB organization. Beyond the U.S., Siegal has made a significant global impact in baseball serving as a coach for Team Israel during the World Baseball Classic. In addition, she became the first female coach in professional leagues across Japan and Mexico as well as with Baseball United in the Middle East and South Asia.”

Justine is thrilled to take on this new challenging, but passionate role. Regarding becoming the WPBL’s first commissioner Siegal mentions,
“Being appointed Commissioner is beyond anything I’ve ever dreamt of and a humbling opportunity to help shape the League and the future of women’s professional baseball. I’m so grateful to be a part of the WPBL, knowing girls have a chance to be a professional baseball player, just like their brothers have for decades. Now is our time.”
Beyond the field, Siegal’s influence earned her a spot on USA Today’s list of the “100 Most Powerful People in MLB” in 2017. Along with the National Baseball Hall of Fame cementing her place in history by displaying the Oakland Athletics jersey and hat she wore. In addition, Siegal received her PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Springfield College and has brought her expertise to the big screen serving as the Baseball Coordinator for the Amazon Prime series A League of Their Own.
