Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Signs Five-Year $252 Million Maximum Rookie-Scale Contract Extension

He came close to glory in his first run in the postseason. Now this San Antonio superstar wants to ensure that his team possesses all the firepower they need to become champions and add to the franchise’s storied legacy. On Friday, it was announced that the San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama has signed a five-year $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension. The deal also includes a player option.

ESPN’s leading NBA insider, Shams Charania; confirmed the news of Victor’s decision to work out and accept a “team-friendly” maximum rookie-scale contract extension. And revealed some of the negotiations details. Charania mentions,

“BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama has signed a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension, with a player option in the fifth season, sources tell ESPN.

Wembanyama decided on the 25% maximum instead of the 30% supermax escalators to $303M, after he and the Spurs went through multiple frameworks. A major decision for the All-NBA star and Defensive Player of the Year entering his fourth season.

San Antonio worked in close partnership with Wembanyama and his representatives, offering the full super max and different variations of extensions. But Wembanyama ultimately chose a contract sacrifice rooted in giving him and the organization increased ability to build a sustained title contender around him.

Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt, CEO RC Buford, GM Brian Wright and coach Mitch Johnson traveled to Paris to meet and spend time with Victor Wembanyama and his family and reps Friday. Wembanyama was essentially a lock to earn a $303M supermax if he played 65 games next season — but he opted for a significant sacrifice at a flash point for the Spurs’ rise.”

Wemby is not the first Spurs star to take a pay cut. In fact, over the years it has almost become the lay of the land. In the Spurs championship past, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker had a history of taking less for the betterment of team-building. Now, Victor is able to add his name to this list.

However, Wemby last season showed why he is still worth every cent of his new contract. In the 2025–2026 NBA season, Victor Wembanyama played 64 regular-season games for the San Antonio Spurs. He posted averages of 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.08 blocks per game.

He was just as electric in the playoffs. Putting up 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game across 22 playoff games. Even his postseason cumulative numbers are incredible . Wemby racked up 524 points, 239 rebounds, and 78 blocks. Historically matching marks only previously accomplished by Hakeem Olajuwon.

Amazing. And now the Spurs lock in their big man for another half decade. Congratulations to Wemby and San Antonio on getting this deal done.
