Washington Wizards Drafted AJ Dybantsa Number One Overall in 2026 NBA Draft

This year’s draft was looked at as being one of the deepest drafts talent-wise in quite some time. Perhaps even rivaling 1996 (a class that produced five Hall of Fame inductees, three MVPs, and an extensive list of All-Stars, Olympic gold medalists, and NBA Champions). In fact, 2026 mock drafts struggled to decide who might go number one overall. Three names kept popping up for months; but only one got the glory at long last. On Tuesday night, the Washington Wizards drafted AJ Dybantsa number one overall in the 2026 NBA Draft.

The Wizards definitely got themselves an exciting rookie to pair with their current roster featuring Anthony Davis and Trae Young. Dybantsa is a 6-foot-9 (with a 6’11” wingspan); two-way wing out of BYU. He led the nation in scoring with 25.5 points per game and is frequently compared to his childhood inspiration, Kevin Durant.

Additionally, despite his youth, he makes a lot of wise decision-making on the court. This led to AJ scoring 894 total points, the third-highest total by a freshman in NCAA history.
Moreover, he earned unanimous First Team All-American honors.

Other names that were in the mix to go number one included: Kansas’ Darryn Peterson as well as Cameron Boozer from Duke. Peterson ultimately went number two to the Utah Jazz. As Boozer found a new home with the Memphis Grizzlies being selected with the third pick.
