Phillies Brad Keller UCL Tear—Expected to Miss Rest of Season

Philadelphia just took another huge blow in the bullpen. The Phillies Brad Keller is heading back to the IL due to a UCL tear in his right elbow; with the expectation that he will miss the rest of the season. Early Thursday morning the Philadelphia ball club announced the news.

Via social media the franchise stated, “Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Mets, the Phillies placed RHP Brad Keller on the 15-day injured list (retro to 7/13) with a right elbow UCL tear. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, RHP Seth Johnson was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.”

MLB insider Jeff Passan also reported on Keller’s latest injury. Passan mentioned,

Phillies reliever Brad Keller has a torn UCL and is expected to miss the rest of the season. If he undergoes surgery on his right elbow, it would keep him out a significant portion, if not all, of 2027 as well. Keller signed a two-year, $22 million deal over the winter.”

The Phillies have enjoyed quite the turnaround after experiencing a disastrous start to the 2026 season. After switching to interim manager Don Mattingly the Phillies have themselves near the top of the National League pack with 54 wins. Only the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers possess more wins in NL.

However, now the Phillies are faced with the issue of bullpen that is leaning out due to injuries. But fortunately, there is still time for Philadelphia to buy some help before the upcoming trade deadline. The problem is there are plenty of teams in the market and not enough “inventory” available.

The 2026 MLB trade deadline is set for August 3 at 6:00 p.m. ET. With the expanded playoff system keeping most teams in contention, the market is shaping up to be highly competitive with limited clear sellers.

Phillies Brad Keller UCL Tear—Expected to Miss Rest of Season

Regarding the Phillies, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale says, “The Philadelphia Phillies’ urgency to find bullpen help accelerated with the news that veteran reliever Brad Keller has a torn UCL. Keller was one of their prized free-agent pick-ups last winter with a 2-year, $22 million contract, surpassing the Cubs’ offer to retain him.”

While Keller may have not pitched his best this season; when making a push for the playoffs it is all hands on deck. Don’t want to have deal with questions regarding roster. However, Keller now adds to the Phillies’ needs. Beyond Brad missing the rest of this season, if Keller needs a surgery such as Tommy John to repair his elbow; you’d figure he’ll miss most/all of next season as well.
