MLB Together and Phillies Unveiled Newly Refurbished Ashburn Field at FDR Park
It’s been some thirty years since Major League Baseball first invested in Ashburn Field at FDR Park. Nonetheless, the league returned to South Philadelphia to unveil an AstroTurf field that will serve young athletes for years to come. MLB Together and the Phillies unveiled the newly refurbished Ashburn Field at FDR Park on Friday. The park updates were designed and created with the goal of helping more kids have the opportunity to access high quality sports experiences.
This modernized space will no doubt inspire many children to become the next baseball stars of tomorrow and to appreciate the joys of the game. Regarding the unveiling of the refurbished Ashburn Field at FDR Park; Major League Baseball announced,
“This All-Star Legacy Project investment helped convert the nearly 30-year-old field into a high-performance synthetic turf system with an updated drainage system. This investment will help reduce the number of games lost to weather conditions for the more than 125 events held here each year.
Named for Phillies great, long time broadcaster, and Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, the field hosts the Phillies Urban Youth Academy, Nike RBI All-Star teams, and other youth baseball organizations including local high school and college teams.”
The project is the latest investment MLB has made in Philadelphia’s youth baseball community. Continuing a partnership that began with the 1996 All-Star Game. The field will serve about 8,000 participants in the Phillies RBI and Youth Academy programs. While providing a weather-resistant playing surface in an area where rain often forces cancellations.

The first game on the new turf featured the Phillies and Cincinnati Reds youth academies in the Commissioner’s Cup. After both teams warmed up in the background during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, with the Phillie Phanatic assisting.
April Brown, MLB Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility believes this field refurbishment will have long-lasting effects. She states, “For All-Star Week, we have the pleasure and honor to start the week before the game and invest in our communities around us. This would not be possible without all of us coming together to invest in the sport that we love, to provide access to play that sport, and to leave a lasting legacy far beyond our All-Star Game.”
