NFL Modified What Can Be Shown on Video Boards During Field Goal and Extra-Point Attempts
One viral social media post. One BIG NFL change. The NFL has modified what can be shown on video boards during field goal and extra-point attempts. The league now requires that teams must use the same All-22 angle or static image for both kicking teams.
The post shot around and seen around the football world wasn’t just put up by just anyone. It was a former NFL coach simply highlighting something he had noticed occurring on Jumbotrons; and researched at great length. Something that probably a lot of fans never really paid attention to when watching. Whether live in-person or at home.
The NFL’s alteration comes in the wake of a viral social-media post by former analytics coach Ryan Paganetti. Paganetti is a Super Bowl-winning football analytics and game-management leader with more than a decade of NFL experience. Working with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders. Ryan studied a decade of Patriots television broadcasts and discovered that when opposing kickers prepared for a FG; the video board displayed a reverse All-22 view of the kick.
The result was a second set of offset goalposts that created an optical illusion for opposing kickers. It is this very practice that will no longer be allowed. Paganetti’s post about his findings occurred on September 1. Apparently, just six days later the league decides to make a change.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the news regarding the kicking aspect of the game. Adam reveals,
“The NFL informed teams that the league has modified what can be shown on video boards during field goal and extra-point attempts, an alteration coming in the wake of a viral social-media post.
Teams now must use the same All-22 angle or static image for both kicking teams. The modification is designed to ensure competitive equity. Teams were warned that violations will result in discipline.”
Ben Volin, Senior NFL Writer at the Boston Globe added, “Can confirm the NFL tweaked its video scoreboard rules Sept 7. Teams are still allowed to show the all-22 angle (creating the “double goal post” effect), but now have to show the same background for both teams. Explains why the Bills turned the boards off for both teams Thursday.”
