Montreal Canadiens Agree on One-Year Contract With Forward Chris Kreider For $2.15 Million
This is indeed a plot twist. Hockey fans knew the official decision was coming soon, but still not what would prove to be the final landing place. However, now all is finally revealed. The Montreal Canadiens announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with forward Chris Kreider for $2.15 million.
Montreal made a short and brief announcement of their latest roster decision. They mentioned,
“The Canadiens have agreed to terms on a one-year contract (2026-27) with forward Chris Kreider.”
Pierre LeBrun, senior NHL columnist for The Athletic also confirmed the news regarding Kreider’s contract with Montreal. LeBrun states,
Kreider contract is $2.15M base with performance that could make the deal $5.4M total if maxed out. Kreider’s decision came down to three teams. Montreal wins out. Comfort level with Martin St. Louis. And obviously history with Jeff Gorton.
While Kreider joining the team may be an adjustment for some of the Montreal fans. Chris is obviously doing his best to keep the past, an uncomfortable collision with Carey Price that occurred years prior where it belongs, back there. Kreider has often been asked whether he had any regrets about the play that led to Carey Price’s injury in the Eastern Conference Final. In which Chris is famously on record for saying, “I look back at it and wish I had put the puck in the net.”
While some fans may still struggle to move on; (whether he was tripped or not tripped) it’s clear that the Montreal organization feels it’s beyond time to turn the page and begin a new chapter. With a contract being inked, Kreider is poised and ready to give his all for the Canadiens. And truth be told, his skillset and talents are a lot of what Montreal has been needing.
Chris Kreider’s low-risk deal gives the Canadiens proven scoring and immediate lineup value. Kreider recorded 50 points last season. Production that suggests he could be an intriguing offensive addition for the team this year.

In 14 NHL seasons with New York and Anaheim, Kreider has 632 points (348 goals, 284 assists) in 958 regular-season games. Also, 83 points (50 goals, 33 assists) in 135 playoff games. Kreider put up 50 points (22 goals, 28 assists) in 75 regular-season games. While scoring seven points (two goals, five assists) in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games last season. His first with the Ducks after being traded by the Rangers for forward prospect Carey Terrance. A trade also involving a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft on June 11, 2025.
The 35-year-old forward had his contract terminated by the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday. One day after being placed on unconditional waivers and went unclaimed. Kreider now joins a Canadiens team which finished third in the Atlantic Division last season (48-24-10). A franchise that advanced to the Eastern Conference Final. But ultimately fell short in their ambitions; losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games.
