Indianapolis Colts and Running Back Jonathan Taylor Agreed to New Contract Extension
The march to signing running backs to new contracts is in full swing. Earlier this week the Atlanta Falcons signed running back, Bijan Robinson, to a new contract extension. Making him the highest paid running back in the league. But two more prominent backs were waiting in the wings to get their new deals done also. That has now happened as the Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor agreed to a new contract extension. With Taylor’s new deal in place, he is now the second highest-paid running back in the NFL on an annual basis. That’s a base value of $22 million per year.
Some of the contract details were provided by NFL Insider Adam Schefter, who posted:
“Another big running back deal: three-time Pro-Bowl RB Jonathan Taylor and the Colts reached agreement today on a two-year, $44 million extension worth up to $47 million that includes $39 million guaranteed, per @rapsheetand me. Taylor’s agent Malki Kawa of @FirstRoundMgmtand the Colts now have finalized the deal, giving Taylor the largest third contract any running back has received.”
Taylor, a seven-year veteran, had been heading into the final season of the three-year, $42 million extension he signed in 2023. The Colts started last season as an offensive juggernaut, but things slowed down after quarterback Daniel Jones was hurt. First, he suffered a leg injury then tore his ACL knocking him completely out for the season. Now Jones is back and ready to get the Colts going again. They intend on Taylor being a big part of the offense. He’s certainly proven his value to the team over the years.

Last season alone, Taylor led the NFL in both carries (323) and rushing touchdowns (18) and has run for at least 1,400 yards and 11 touchdowns in each of the last two years. Signing him to the extension ensures that he will be a large part of the offense this season. However, the Colts also signed Daniel Jones to a two-year, $88 million contract to return to the fold. And they signed wide receiver Alec Pierce to a new contract for $114 million over four years.
The Colts have their quarterback, wide receiver and now running back locked down. It’s up to head coach Shanie Steichen to put his offensive weapons to good use. The team has seen improvement on the offensive side of the ball since his arrival. They ranked in the top 10 in offensive categories such as yards per game, points per drive and red zone efficiency. We’re going to learn if they can become an offensive nightmare for the rest of the league.
