Detroit Lions Officially Made Jahmyr Gibbs the Highest-Paid Running Back in the NFL

Well, it didn’t take long to get the ball rolling and now it’s already at the bottom of the hill. Earlier this week we were waiting to see who would get signed first and it turned out to be Bijan Robinson. The Atlanta Falcons made him the highest-paid running back in the league. But his title was short-lived. After Jonathan Taylor was made the second highest paid running back, we weren’t left waiting for long to see if Robinson would retain the title. The Detroit Lions have officially made Jahmyr Gibbs the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Not surprising since his nickname is Sonic, after the animated ball of speed.

Gibbs has an impressive resume for a guy with three full seasons under his belt. It’s no wonder the Lions wanted to keep him on the team with a big extension. Speaking on the deal, NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted on social media:

Last but hardly least: Three-time Pro-Bowl selection Jahmyr Gibbs and the Lions reached agreement today on a three-year, $67.5 million deal that could be worth up to $75.75 million and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, now making him the NFL’s highest-paid running back, confirmed by his @AthletesFirstagent Todd France (Toddfrance_ on IG).”

Here are a few reasons why the Lions needed to get this deal done:

  • His 31 games with a touchdown are tied for the most through three-career seasons in NFL history.
  • Became the only player in Lions history to have multiple seasons with 17-or-more touchdowns.
  • He became the first player in franchise history to produce multiple seasons with 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards.
  • Became the seventh player in NFL history to rush for at least 10 touchdowns in each of the first three seasons of a player’s career.

And he has so many more franchise and league statistics that are mind blowing.

Before this week, running back Saquon Barkley was all alone in the $20 million annually club. But in one week alone he has three new companions. As also pointed out by Schefter:

“There was only one $20 million-per-year running back entering this offseason. The NFL now has seen three players enter that category this week alone: Jahmyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson, and Jonathan Taylor.”

All of these running backs are great on their own merits. But you have to wonder what some of the old-time explosive running backs would think. Guys like Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Earl Campbell paved the way for this generation. But at least the new guys are reaping the benefits of their hard work. We honor the ones who came before and salute the ones we have now. Congratulations on your massive new contract Jahmyr Gibbs!
