San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper announced he has been diagnosed with throat cancer, but remains optimistic about his recovery. While he’ll miss a few upcoming games, he’ll be back in the booth next weekend alongside Mike Krukow for Krukow’s final broadcasts.
Longtime San Francisco Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow announced on August 6, 2026, that he will retire at the end of the 2026 MLB season, concluding a remarkable 36-year career in the broadcast booth. The 74-year-old Krukow made his retirement announcement explaining that this year would be his last, expressing gratitude from him and wife, Jennifer. Therefore, Kuiper would definitely want to be there, to send off Krukow.
In a news release on Sunday morning, Duane Kuiper shared a statement revealing his recent throat cancer diagnosis. He began treatment last week. He’ll be out on Monday and Wednesday, but if aiming to be a part of the broadcast on Tuesday as well as the final weekend.
San Francisco’s final home stand is shaping up to be very emotional. With the news of Kuiper and Kukrow hanging up his mic. But Duane Kuiper giving his all to juggle treatment and work. Just proves how much of a true warrior he is for the Giants organization. And a baseball voice that continues to demonstrate his respect and love for the game.

Via the San Francisco Giants social media page, Kuiper released the following statement:
“I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer and began treatment last week with my doctors at Stanford Medicine. This cancer is unrelated to the one I experienced five years ago, and I’m optimistic that it will be successfully treated. I’ll miss the broadcasts tomorrow and Wednesday as I continue treatment, but I’m looking forward to returning Tuesday and this weekend to celebrate my partner, Mike Krukow, and his remarkable career as he calls his final game before retirement. I’m incredibly grateful for the care I’m receiving and for the tremendous support, from my family, the Giants organization, my broadcast partners and so many others.”
