He called it himself back in 2021, but now it’s a reality… he is coming home. A reunion half a decade in the making. With Philadelphia Eagles TE Dallas Goedert to miss a few weeks, the Eagles are bringing back all time great Zach Ertz to the practice squad.
5 years after departing, and just 11 catches away from passing Harold Carmichael for the most in Eagles history. Zach Ertz returns to Philadelphia and is expected to play next Monday Night in Chicago. Finishing a legendary career in the only right place.
Philly and Ertz rejoining forces comes on the heels of the Eagles roster suffering from injuries. For instance, TE Dallas Goedert, who continues to be a big part of their offense, suffered a sprained MCL in Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans, test revealed on Monday.
ESPN NFL insider, Adam Schefter confirmed the Zach Ertz practice squad development Monday afternoon stating,
“Three-time Pro-Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, who played in Philadelphia from 2013-‘21 and helped the team win its first Super Bowl, is returning to the city and signing with the Eagles practice squad, per sources. The Eagles lost TE Dallas Goedert to a sprained MCL and now are turning to Ertz, who spent the past two seasons in Washington.
Zach Ertz needs just 11 more receptions to break Harold Carmichael’s franchise record of 589 catches and become the Eagles’ all-time catch leader.”

As mentioned at the outset, five years ago Zach called it. He told Eagles fans that he would be back. Ertz tearfully stated, “This is home. Philadelphia is home. I love this place. This is the best city to play for and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. This isn’t going to be the last you will see of me in this city.”
The Eagles and Zach Ertz remained in contact through the summer. With Dallas Goedert, Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra injured, Ertz makes his return.
One other cool aspect of this reunion story is this: Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz were the Eagles’ top 2 picks in the 2013 NFL draft. 13 years later – they’re teammates once again, and possibly both on their farewell tours.
