Dodgers Shohei Ohtani Will Be Shut Down From Pitching for “Some Time”—Due to Knee Injury

Pitching heavily relies on good mechanics. Therefore, an injury involving any region of the body can certainly wreck havoc on a starting pitcher attempting to do his job. Case in point, the newest dilemma in Los Angeles. The Dodgers Shohei Ohtani will be shut down from pitching for “some time” as he manages his knee injury.

The fact that there is no definitive timeline for a return is what makes this development take on a serious tone. But the organization maintains that Ohtani will be back in the swing later on this season. According to Los Angeles Dodgers beat reporter Jack Harris,

“Shohei Ohtani is not going to make a pitching start on Wednesday anymore, [manager] Dave Roberts said. They want to give his knee more time.

Dodgers don’t know when Shohei Ohtani will pitch again, but Dave Roberts said it’s likely “going to be some time.” Knee still bothered him in catch play this week, so team hopes more rest (from pitching) helps it calm down. Roberts still expects Ohtani to pitch again this year.

Dave Roberts: ‘The benefits just don’t seem to outweigh the cost at this time of the season.’”

As one can see, Shohei Ohtani’s halt in his pitching was a sudden decision. And he now maintains an uncertain status as a pitcher, all while the Dodgers don’t expect him back on the mound for likely “some time.”

Shohei’s knee injury gained more traction and attention when the Dodgers announced that Shohei Ohtani would not participate in this year’s All Star Game held in Philadelphia. That star-studded event has come and gone; and Ohtani is still shutdown from pitching mound activity.

Nevertheless, despite his ongoing knee problem, Shohei Ohtani will continue to DH for the Dodgers. And he has still been very effective and productive for his team in this regard. Blasting his 21st home run during a Friday matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks. And most recently doubling off the wall in right-center to open the scoring against the New York Yankees.

However, there was a slight scare during the Yankees series. Shohei Ohtani fouled a ball off his ailing left knee during one of his at-bats. He looked like he was running somewhat gingerly back to the dugout after grounding out. But, good news, Dave Roberts confirms that Shohei Ohtani was OKAY after fouling that ball off his knee. So looks like further disaster was avoided.
