Canes are 2026 Stanley Cup Champions After Ousting Golden Knights in Game 6
The Canes’ historic championship run included numerous comeback wins, overtime drama and more. Their thrilling 2026 postseason had it all. While Vegas put up a good fight, Carolina dominated and now get to enjoy being this season’s ultimate victors. The Canes are the 2026 Stanley Cup champions after ousting the Golden Knights in Game 6. Just 5 days short of the 20-year anniversary of the franchise’s first championship.
The Canes achieved their second Stanley Cup in franchise history thanks to a dominant 16-3 record through the postseason. And they made a lot of history in the process. They are the third team to win the first six overtime games of the postseason. They are the fifth team to start the postseason with eight straight wins. And they are the third team with a series win in eight straight years.
Furthermore, even on an individual level, the Canes impressed on the ice. Every championship team needs a leader and Carolina’s captain did not let them down. Due to his performance, Jordan Staal now joins Wayne Gretzky as the second captain in the past 105 years to score at least six goals in a Stanley Cup Final; thus helping the Canes win their second title. Per NHL EDGE IQ, Jordan Staal led all players in scoring chances (20) during the Stanley Cup Final. Of those 20 scoring chances, four resulted in a goal and 10 forced a save.
Additionally, Carolina went 6-for-19 (31.6%) with the man advantage in the Final, outperforming Vegas (2-for-18; 11.1%). Jordan Staal ranked second in power-play goals during the Final (2), behind Andrei Svechnikov (3). As one can see, Staal was a man on a mission, and his mission for the title was accomplished.
Carolina’s goaltenders were also lights out in this series versus the Las Vegas Knights. They locked up the Knights and threw away the key. Frederik Andersen and Brandon Bussi had a combined 16-3 record in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They have the second-fewest losses by a Stanley Cup-winning team since 1987 (when all rounds became best-of-7); only behind the 1988 Oilers (16-2 in 18 GP). The Hurricanes became the first Stanley Cup-winning team in 41 years with multiple starting goaltenders during the Final. And are the third in the expansion era after the 1984 Oilers (Grant Fuhr & Andy Moog) and 1972 Bruins (Gerry Cheevers & Eddie Johnston).
Brandon Bussi became the third goaltender in NHL history to record a Stanley Cup clinching shutout during their first NHL season (no NHL GP in prior seasons). Joining Earl Robertson (Game 5 of 1937 SCF) and Andy Aitkenhead (Game 4 of 1933 SCF).
Brandon Bussi also became the second undrafted goaltender to record a Stanley Cup-clinching shutout, joining Bernie Parent (2x; 1975 PHI & 1974 PHI). Moreover, Sunday’s Game 6 win saw most of the Canes roster become first-time Stanley Cup champions, with only William Carrier (2023 w/ VGK) and Jordan Staal (2009 w/ PIT) having previous cup-winning experience.

However, this does not mean Carolina didn’t have some veteran knowledge to lean on. In fact, Rod Brind’Amour is now the fourth individual in NHL history to captain a Stanley Cup winner and then lead that club to another championship as head coach. He joined Toe Blake with the Canadiens, Hap Day with the Maple Leafs and Cooney Weiland with the Bruins.
Rod Brind’Amour has competed in 102 of 104 playoff wins in Canes team history. Winning 39 as a player and 63 as a head coach, including both Stanley Cup -clinching victories. Quite a legacy.
Therefore, what a team and what a win! This has been a very exciting season and we can’t to it all again in a few months.
