New York defeated San Antonio 4-1 in the NBA Finals, capturing their third championship in franchise history. And the New York Knicks are the FIRST team in NBA history to win the Emirates NBA Cup and an NBA Championship in the same season.
The last time New York celebrated being NBA champs was back in the early seventies. The year it happened the first cell phone call was made, the original World Trade Center was dedicated; gas averaged $0.39 per gallon and a postage stamp cost just 8 cents. Additionally, the #1 song on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 chart was “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” by Tony Orlando and Dawn; and if you turned on the news you were going to hear about Watergate.
Yes, if you guessed 1973, you would be correct. New York fans have had to wait over 50 years for another Finals victory. Nonetheless, with their first title since 1973, the Knicks snapped the longest drought between titles for any team in NBA history. For New York, war is indeed over.
Knicks 2026 NBA Champions—Jalen Brunson Becomes 2026 NBA Finals MVP
As mentioned, Jalen Brunson was voted as the undeniable MVP of this year’s NBA Finals. Jalen Brunson became the first Knick to win Finals MVP since Willis Reed in 1973. He received all 11 votes from the media panel, making him a unanimous selection.
Brunson averaged 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds over the five-game series. He scored 45 points in the clincher, tying Michael Jordan’s record for most points by a road player in a title-clinching game. Furthermore, several times in the series the Knicks had to overcome being down early and close out strong in the fourth quarter.
In fact, the Knicks are the first team since the 1971 NBA Finals to trail by 10+ PTS in every game of the series and win the championship. Brunson was a huge factor in New York being able to power past the Spurs. Brunson averaged 11.2 points in the fourth quarter throughout the Finals, the highest mark in league history.
However, Brunson’s performance during the Finals is not surprising. He was amazing throughout the season. In addition to his Finals MVP honors, Brunson’s 2025–26 season included being awarded the Larry Bird Trophy after the Knicks defeated the Boston Celtics to reach the Finals. Brunson also led the Knicks to a tournament victory (NBA Cup); earlier in the season. Lastly, he finished as a top-three candidate for the regular-season MVP award.
