It’s that time of the year when ball clubs begin to be mathematically removed from postseason contention. For instance, the Los Angeles Angels will now miss the playoffs for a 12th straight season. The longest active drought of any MLB team. Additionally, the Los Angeles Angels are also the first American League team to be eliminated from playoff contention.
The Angels are the latest franchise to be eliminated from postseason contention. Their last trip to the playoffs came in 2014 (lost in ALDS). So then, one of the only consolations here in 2026 is that the Halos are not the first organization to walk the plank this season. They are actually the 2nd team to be eliminated as the Colorado Rockies were eliminated yesterday.
The Los Angeles Angels have a current record of 54-90 W/L (last place in division & AL). They would have to go 9-9 in their final 18 games in order to avoid their 1st ever 100 loss season. This means that the Angels will need to play .500 baseball to finish the season to avoid 100 losses.
Therefore, obviously some things need to drastically change and improve for Los Angeles to end this drought. The last time the Angels made the playoffs, Mike Trout was 23 years old. Trout has only played in the post season 1 time in his career. He’s made the playoffs only once in 16 seasons. Twelve years later after their last postseason appearance and the Angels can’t seem to get into any position to even remotely compete for a championship.
This Los Angeles ball club has not finished with a winning record since 2015. In fact, L.A.’s .375 winning percentage this season is the worst in franchise history.

However, the future is still feeling bright for the Halos. A new era and chapter is being ushered in with the recent sale of the franchise to Stan Kroenke. Kroenke also owns the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Nuggets and has won recent championships with both teams.
With his track record, Stan will no doubt do whatever is needed to help put the Angels back in playoff contention. The Angels were sold for a valuation of $4 billion, sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney, beating the previous MLB record for a sale of $3.9 billion. Kroenke reached agreement to buy the Angels September 1st, with the transaction expected to become official in the first quarter of 2027.
