Former Chicago Bears Fullback and Super Bowl Champion Matt Suhey Unexpectedly Died at 68
Thanks to his prowess he helped the legendary Walter Payton become one of the greatest NFL running backs in history. Together the two made for a powerful offensive punch. For ten years they kept other defenses on their toes as they ran all over football fields racking up yardage. Unfortunately, the team has announced that former Chicago Bears fullback and Super Bowl champion Matt Suhey unexpectedly died at 68. Suhey had been in good health, so his death was a surprise to many of his friends.
Former Bears safety Gary Fencik commented about Suhey’s death, saying:
“It was out of the blue,” former Bears safety Gary Fencik said. “I was scheduling a breakfast with Matt for this week, so I was shocked. It’s shocking, but it’s just reality. Some of my teammates are passing away. We’re no longer invincible. I think of Steve McMichael and now Matt.”
McMichael, who was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, battled ALS for several years before dying in 2025. The 1985 Chicago Bears team was so fierce and feared that it’s hard to think of any of those guys as being vulnerable, even to death. However, no information has been provided as the cause of his death. Which makes his passing all the more painful. Particularly to the people who knew him well such as Walter Payton’s son, Jarrett:
“After we lost my dad in 1999, Matt became the biggest father figure I had,” Walter’s son, Jarrett, posted on social media on Monday. “When everything felt uncertain, he was there. My dad left him in charge and Matt never let that responsibility sit lightly. He protected our family. He looked after us. He made sure we were okay, year after year, without ever making it about himself.
“That is who he was.”

Suhey played in 148 of a possible 152 regular-season games during his 10 years with the Bears, starting 100. Proving himself to be a reliable and durable player. He had 828 carries for 2,946 yards and 20 touchdowns. Suhey also had 260 receptions for 2,113 yards and five TDs. And he scored the first TD against the Patriots on an 11-yard run in the first quarter of Super Bowl XX.
Off the field he worked at the Chicago Board of Trade in the offseasons and became a full-time trader and owned a bottled water company after he retired from the NFL. Summing up how he felt about Suhey, former Bears defender Mike Singletary had this to say: “When I go to Chicago, Matt Suhey comes to my mind because I want to see his smile and hear him teasing me about something,” Singletary said. “I’m really, really going to miss that light.”
