Zizou Bergs Gets Biggest Win of Career Over 2nd Seed and Tokyo Champion Carlos Alcaraz
A real shocker and turn of events at Rolex Shanghai Masters. BERGS STUNS ALCARAZ! Zizou Bergs gets his biggest win of his career over 2nd seed and Tokyo champion Carlos Alcaraz. Bergs stops Alcaraz’s win streak at 7, with a 7-5 7-6(4) win in Shanghai. Wow.
It was not a good day in the office for Carlos Alcaraz. He did not seem to fully look like himself on the court. Instead Bergs rapidly ousts Alcaraz in straight sets thanks to lights out serving.
Alcaraz, himself even felt “off.” Carlos Alcaraz spoke about the strange conditions of the court and the balls in Shanghai. Something to him was not right as he was playing. After his defeat he mentioned,
“The sensations today and on the first day were totally different. It’s unusual for the conditions to feel so different in just two days. On the first day, I found the ball fast, and today I felt it bigger and a bit slower—it’s something the tournament should pay attention to. My feeling is that the ball was bouncing differently each time: sometimes it would bounce up, and other times it would skid. When you hit a second-serve return attacking from high to low, the ball can’t bounce over your head, and then on the next point, it bounces completely differently. I haven’t been able to adapt.
I also don’t want to make excuses; these are just sensations. I try to see the ball as it comes and prepare for that shot, but when it comes in a different way, it’s already too late. Maybe I have to play in a different way.”

However, Carlos’ opponent had a different opinion. Regarding the balls and conditions in Shanghai Zizou states,
“The balls are exactly the same ones we used in the previous tournament, so I don’t think that’s the problem”
“It is true that, there was some odd bounce on the court. It’s something I’ve noticed even during warm-ups. Maybe you encounter a bad bounce every ten or twenty shots. That exists and I’m not going to deny it, but I think that, in general, both the courts and the balls are very good.”
Sounds like both men did their best with the given conditions. And Zizou fought through and secured his victory. Facing Zizou Bergs in the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters 1000, Carlos Alcaraz fell in two sets to the world No. 39 (7-5, 7-6 [4]). This loss ends a streak of six consecutive victories for the Alcaraz, who had won the Tokyo title just six days earlier.
