WNBA Revealed Name and Logo For Next Expansion Team the Cleveland Sirens
They teased it. The fans loved it. However, now it is official. The WNBA has revealed the name and logo for its next expansion team the Cleveland Sirens.
Cleveland announced their name via social media. Hash-tagging the exciting announcement post with the tagline “Hear the Call.” A fitting rally cry that fully encompasses the franchise name to a “T.” How so?
Well, a siren mermaid is a popular mix of two different sea legends: the dangerous, singing sirens of Greek myth and the fish-tailed mermaids of folklore. In Greek mythology, singing sirens used their ethereal, beautiful voices to trick sailors. Luring and lulling sailors to their ultimate demise.
Cleveland’s name is building a culture of players being able to strategically and effectively (dare we say sneakily); take down visitors. Just like a siren would. Nonetheless, the Cleveland organization confirmed the name and logo of the new WNBA expansion team stating,
“We are the Cleveland Sirens. This is HER story. This is HER voice. And the world is listening.”
Regarding how the franchise settled on the name Sirens, the team revealed,
“The Cleveland Sirens are Cleveland’s WNBA team, sharp, unapologetic, fearless and relentless. Named for Lake Erie’s power and pull, the Sirens will play at Rocket Arena starting in 2028. On the court and in the community, the Sirens stand for opportunity, elevating women’s basketball and building something that can only exist here.”

The Sirens will be the league’s 16th team, and will tip off for the first time in the spring of 2028. Some longtime W fans had hoped for a return to the Cleveland Rockers name. However, the franchise made it clear that the brand colors and name were never going to be kept the same, because they want a fresh start. Regarding this decision, the Sirens posted,
“[We are] distinctly and authentically Cleveland. When women’s basketball came home, there was only one way to do it: unmistakably Cleveland.
This lake will never forget the sound. Cleveland gave the world rock and roll, then brought that sound to the WNBA stage. Now, we’re back. With a different song. A louder one.
We are symbolic of something greater than ourselves: bold, relentless and undeniably defiant. We are powerful. Our presence is magnetic. Commanding attention without asking for it. As confident as the city and the moment itself. This is a rising tide, moving at the pace of progress for women’s sports and Northeast Ohio.”
So then, Cleveland is very proud of its past. But it is absolutely thrilled about its future. Now they are building enthusiasm for basketball fans to Hear the Call and enjoy all of the future and sure to be exhilarating moments.
