Two NFL Officials Were Suspended for Unprofessional Conduct Toward Players

Oftentimes fans complain about the way a game is officiated, not liking the penalties that are being called. Many times the penalties don’t seem to make any sense and gets people riled up. Well apparently, the officials can get riled up too. However, it wasn’t immediately clear on Sunday why two officials in two different games got upset. But on Monday it was confirmed that two NFL officials were suspended for unprofessional conduct toward players. The occurrences took place during the Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants and Miami Dolphins at Minnesota Vikings games.

During the Cardinals and Giants game the NFL official appeared to curse at Cardinals’ tight end Trey McBride. McBride had been pleading with the official for a pass interference penalty on Giants’ player Andru Phillips. Phillips had made contact with McBride prior to the pass from Jacoby Brisset reaching the tight end. The official decline to call the penalty. Then he and McBride continued to exchange words during which time the official appeared to say f*** you, multiple times. As a result of the incident the NFL suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games.

JC Tretter, the NFL Players Association’s executive director took to social media about the matter. “This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard.” Players argue all the time with officials when they feel calls are incorrect. So, what got this official so angry is not at clear. Nevertheless, he’s paying for his expletive-filled tirade with a two-game suspension.

The other official who was suspended for one game is referee Adrian Hill. His incident occurred during the game between Minnesota and Miami. Eric Wilson the linebacker for Minnesota, accidentally collided with Hill, who then turned and yelled at Wilson. However, it actually looked like Wilson was inadvertently pushed into Hill by one of the Dolphins’ players. When Hill tried to help the official up from the ground, he aggressively pointed at Wilson and told him to get back to the huddle. The official’s reaction was overblown and unnecessary. Nevertheless, it warranted him a one-game suspension.

It’s good to see the NFL take action against the two officials for their behavior. After all, the players are always being fined for unsportsmanlike conduct or conduct detrimental to the league. Hopefully, the suspension of the officials will set a precedent moving forward.
