The FIFA 2026 World Cup Was Fun But 23 Million People Expressed Their Dissatisfaction
For many Americans football or soccer as we like to call it is not that popular of a sport. And yet the United States hosted the biggest football event of the world earlier this month. While many people from around the world came to the United States and had a good time, controversy swirled around the event itself. Nevertheless, the FIFA 2026 World Cup was fun, but 23 million people expressed their dissatisfaction. Yet if a good time was had by all then why were so many people upset?
Well people were extremely unhappy with the officials, believing that Argentina was heavily favored throughout the tournament. Therefore, more than 23 million people from around 170 countries signed an online petition demanding that FIFA permanently ban Argentina from future FIFA World Cups. Resulting in the petition becoming almost the largest campaigns ever recorded worldwide.
The petition, titled “Argentina Out,” accused FIFA and match officials of consistently favoring Argentina and Lionel Messi throughout the 2026 World Cup. Its blunt message stated there was little point in other nations competing if, as many supporters believed, the outcome had already been influenced. Even though Spain went on to win the World Cup title 1-0, people are still demanding change from FIFA.
Yes, in spite of Argentina losing and failing to repeat as champions, people are upset. Throughout the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, Argentina was on the receiving end of some controversial calls, tesso the point where fans were growing upset, accusing the referees of major bias. The initial goal of the petition was to get 5,000,000 signatures but the number of people signing has blown past that mark over four times. Who knows how high the number could have been, but the petition is closed now.

Fans were angry over every disputed foul, penalty decision, and refereeing judgment, leading them to believe favoritism existed. However, none of those allegations received official support, and FIFA rejected suggestions that the tournament had been manipulated.
Something else that came to the forefront during the World Cup was Argentina’s history of racism. Particularly people of African descent. The racism against Black communities, resurfaced and ignited global outrage online. That history is real and well documented. Race debates in Argentine football culture, and its re-emergence on social media, likely added moral weight to a petition that was, at its core, about perceived referee bias.
But the FIFA World Cup, like the petition, has come to a conclusion. Argentine star Lionel Messi may have played in his final World Cup game. And the world continues to spin and racism remains a global problem.
