Philadelphia Eagles Secured Defensive Tackle Jalen Carter with Massive Contract Extension
They’re at it again, locking up their premier players for the foreseeable future. Before his contract could expire, they stepped up to make sure that he stayed in the fold. The Philadelphia Eagles secured defensive tackle Jalen Carter with a massive contract extension. In fact, that has been the Eagles policy to build from within, keeping their own guys and helping them prosper within their system. Their philosophy has been described as: ‘draft well and reward your homegrown talent rather than always paying a premium on the free agent market.’
The Eagles and Carter agreed to terms on a new four-year contract extension through the 2031 season. NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted the following on social media:
“Breaking: Eagles are signing two-time Pro-Bowl selection Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension worth up to $160 million, including $106 million guaranteed that now makes him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history, per his agents Drew and Jason Rosenhaus. Carter now will be under contract to the Eagles through the 2031 season.”
With Carter’s signing he is now the highest paid defensive tackle in the league, following him are:
2. Jeffery Simmons: $35.2M
3. Chris Jones: $31.75M
4. Dexter Lawrence: $28M
5. Milton Williams: $26M
Carter has certainly done enough to warrant the extension. He is a two-time Pro Bowl selection, an All-Pro in 2024, and a key contributor to the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory after four years with the team. He was drafted in the 2023 NFL Draft with the ninth pick. Since then, he has established himself as being powerful and quick with a football IQ to block one-on-one. Hence speaking of himself, Carter stated: “I have the mindset,” Carter says, “that nobody can outdo me.”

Carter has a positive viewpoint of himself and his abilities. As does the Eagles defensive coordinator, who said, “He disrupts the game, he’s smart, and he plays hard,” Eagles Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio said of Carter. “There aren’t many like him out there and I’m glad he’s on our side.” And despite having great statistics- 121 quarterback pressures, 108 total tackles, 13.5 quarterback sacks, and 12 passes defensed – they don’t really show how important Carter is to the defense.
He can set the right defensive tone for the team as noted by Kliff Kingsbury. “He’s one of the most dominant players in the league, if not the most dominant that I’ve seen,” former Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said late in the 2025 season. “He can wreck a game by himself. 98 is as good a player as there is in the NFL right now.”
