Tampa Bay Buccaneer Top Defender Vita Vea Has Reportedly Requested a Trade
Things are unsettled down in Florida for one professional team. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has reported to training camp but without a new deal in place. Now Tampa Bay Buccaneer top defender Vita Vea has reportedly requested a trade. He is in the final year of his current contract and is set to make $17.7 million this year. However, none of that money is guaranteed. Most people are shocked to hear about this trade request. As there had been no indication that Vea would want one. The Buccaneers have been his team since he started his career in the NFL.
After an appearance on the Kay Adams show it appears that Vea is hoping to get a new contract for big bucks. Adams asked how close Vea and the Bucs were on an extension. “I don’t know. I hope we’re close, my fingers are crossed, I think,” exclaimed Vea. Nevertheless, He “held in” at training camp when he didn’t get his deal, and on Monday, he officially requested a trade from the organization as training camp begins.
With Vea being a crucial part of the defense the Buccaneers can’t afford to lose him. However, he is getting older and at 30 it may be more difficult for him to get the deal he wants. Some say he’s seeking a contract around $25 million per year, or possibly more. As sports journalist River Wells pointed out: ‘The Buccaneers need Vea and Vea would like to stay in one jersey for his NFL career, so the Bucs are more likely to work out a short-term solution with Vea as opposed to actually trading him — he has the highest probability of playing for the Bucs in 2026.’
Tampa Bay Buccaneer Top Defender Vita Vea Has Reportedly Requested a Trade
Baker Mayfield on offense and Vita Vea on defense being unsettled, is troubling for the Buccaneers. However, it appears both players would like to finish their careers with the team. They lost long-time wide receiver Mike Evans to the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year. He spent his first 12 years with Tampa Bay and signed a three-year $60.4 million contract with the 49ers.
But for now, veteran players reported to the team’s 2026 training camp on Tuesday. The Buccaneers have 91 players in camp because tackle Paul Rubelt, a product of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program as a native German, carries an exemption. So, we’ll wait to see how the drama unfolds for both Vea and Mayfield. At any rate, there are rumors that teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders are interested in landing him.
