Los Angeles has had a very busy offseason. While the purple and gold did make it to the playoffs last season, they still did not achieve their ultimate goal. Therefore, the franchise got to work to make some improvements. Now, Lakers legend Magic Johnson discusses LA’s offseason moves in preparation for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. In fact, Magic Johnson made it clear that the new roster surrounding Luka might get off to a poor start.
After losing all-time leading scorer, LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers completely restructured their roster in the 2026 offseason. Key additions include guard Quentin Grimes (four years, $60 million), center Sandro Mamukelashvili (four years, $52 million), guard Collin Sexton (two years, $19 million), and center Walker Kessler via trade, alongside re-signing guard Austin Reaves.
Nonetheless, on Monday Magic headed online to express his thoughts on all moves GM Rob Pelinka has made. Johnson feels the Lakers did everything they needed to do in order to be in a better position to contend for a title. Magic states,
“I said this offseason the Lakers had to get younger, more athletic, and faster, and they did just that. We got a young, athletic center in Walker Kessler who can score and is a great rim protector, and I was so happy they signed two-time All Defensive player Matisse Thybulle!
I’ve enjoyed watching the two young players Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes. Sexton’s speed and quickness, and Grimes’ scoring and defense make them two great pickups for the Lakers! They also added three point shooting from Sandro Mamukelashvili. I loved the way our first round pick Cameron Carr played in summer league, he has a beautiful three point shot and is very athletic. I don’t know much about Ziaire Williams yet, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about his game!”

However, Johnson still had some additional advice for the purple and gold fandom. He reminds Los Angeles fans that this roster will not gel right away. And they’ll need a little time to do so.
Regarding giving the new Lakers roster a moment to really come together, Magic says, “Lakers fans have to be patient though. These 7 new players have to learn how to play with superstar Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, so we may not get off to a good start.”
