Steve Kerr Not Expected to Return as the Warriors Head Coach Next Season

Four championships. Most wins during a NBA regular season. A dynasty that terrorized the league for a decade (and still causes PTSD). The Warriors have come to a crossroad. All good things must come to an end… or at the very least be reformed in order to survive. Golden State wants to give Curry another shot at a fifth title and feels change might be in order to make it happen. With such a viewpoint in mind, longtime GSW head coach Steve Kerr is not expected to return as the Warriors head coach next season.

The Warriors’ exhausting season ended Friday night, and now, as journalist Dalton Johnson reports, Steve Kerr, Steph Curry and Draymond Green head into the great unknown. Johnson states,

“Since the 2022 title, the Warriors have been one of the final four teams in the West twice and have made the play-in the two other years. It hasn’t been perfect. There are reasons for frustrations. But they haven’t been cellar dwellers.

Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy usually speaks the day after exit interviews. Not this year. Dunleavy won’t talk until Steve Kerr’s decision has been made. Change is coming, but the question is, how much?”

Kerr told ESPN in the season’s final week he genuinely felt it was somewhere around 50-50 whether he’d ultimately remain or depart. Truly believing that the postseason time away from the grind and conversations with Lacob, Dunleavy and Curry would be influential. Steve specifically said, “I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.”

Well, if Kerr does decide not to return; where might Golden State look for a replacement? Kevin Connor of Yahoo Sports suggests,

If Kerr walks, ESPN reported that the front office would consider external candidates, even exploring the college ranks. I’m told the Warriors love Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden. He’s known the Lacob family for years, and league sources say they’ve long admired his coaching talent ever since he was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco.

But Golden would be no guarantee to leave Florida for a Warriors franchise that is, frankly, a less appealing destination than it used to be. With aging stars and no youthful core to build around, the Warriors may no longer be in a position to get exactly what they want.”

The Warriors missed the playoffs four out of the past seven seasons, failing to advance past the second round since 2022. If Steve Kerr decides to remain on board, GSW will discuss staffing and what management believes is a need for philosophy tweaks. Additionally team sources said, this would mean focusing on diversifying the offensive attack and winning the analytically friendly possession battle more often. While the Warriors organization would like to give Kerr the necessary time to mull things over, the franchise feels a strong need to get the coaching situation settled quickly before pivoting to other pressing roster and strategic matters.
