Bulls Head Coach Billy Donovan is Exiting After Six Seasons

Chicago is undergoing sweeping changes and reform when it comes to its front office. Now the organization will add on a hunt for a new head coach. On Tuesday it was confirmed that Bulls head coach Billy Donovan is exiting after six seasons.

Just days ago the Bulls announced that Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Artūras Karnišovas and General Manager Marc Eversley had been relieved of their positions. Regarding these departures, President and Chief Executive Officer, Michael Reinsdorf had mentioned that, “These decisions are never easy, especially when they involve people we respect both personally and professionally. We are grateful for their dedication and the work they’ve put in over the past six years. At the same time, we have not had the success our fans deserve, and it’s my responsibility to go in a new direction. This move is about positioning our team for sustained success moving ahead.”

Furthermore, Chicago had actually seen Billy Donovan as being part of the organization’s future winning formula. However, it is Donovan that is choosing to exit stage right. ESPN’s Shams Charania reports,

“BREAKING: Billy Donovan is exiting as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons, sources tell ESPN.

The Bulls made clear that the organization wanted Donovan back after making sweeping changes to their front office, but Donovan held an option in his contract for next season and elected to step down after extensive meetings with team ownership in the last week, sources said.

Donovan determined he wanted to give the team a clean break, provide the ability for the organization to undergo its front office search and allow the new top basketball executive to make the next coaching hire.”

As news of his departure broke, Billy Donovan released the following statement:

“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold. I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit. My gratitude for this community and this organization is permanent. Thank you Jerry and Michael for giving me this opportunity and more importantly, for the relationship that has been forged. I was so blessed to be able to work with such great owners. I owe so much to my players and staff over the last six years. You all have worked side by side with me, day in and day out to drive the Bulls organization forward. And a huge thank you to Bulls fans, your energy, passion and unwavering support provided a home-court advantage that is generally unmatched around the league.”

Donovan had a 226-256 record during his time in Chicago. With Donovan deciding to leave the Chicago Bulls, this now clears the way for the franchise to start full searches on the next head of basketball and head coach. There are now three coaching vacancies in the NBA: Chicago will join Milwaukee and New Orleans in conducting a coaching search.
