Steelers Coach Mike McCarthy Saw Loss Coming From Offensive Struggles in Practice

On Monday afternoon, Mike McCarthy addressed the media at 3 pm eastern time. Many felt it was doubtful that he would reveal much at all concerning injured players. Or discuss what the week may or may not hold for Joey Porter Jr. However, one comment regarding the offense stuck out like a sore thumb. Steelers coach Mike McCarthy said he saw [problems] coming from offensive struggles in practice.

McCarthy held his weekly press conference at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. The presser comes on the heels of a disappointing week for the franchise. The Steelers had started the season looking quite promising. Not perfect and polished, but with potential.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won their Week 1 matchup of the 2026 season, defeating the Atlanta Falcons 20-13. Holding Atlanta to just 238 total yards of offense. The victory marked the start of a 1-0 record for the team, powered by a strong defensive performance and a crucial fourth-quarter pick-six by T.J. Watt.

But fast forward one week and the organization looks like a completely different team on the field. On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a 17-point loss to the New England Patriots. Where nothing went right on either side of the ball.

Offense could not get anything going. Defense had no answers for the Pats. The Steelers found themselves held to just three points the entire game. The Pats won, 3-20. McCarthy’s Steelers struggled offensively at Gillette Stadium, managing only a single field goal and falling to a 1-1 record on the season.

Furthermore, the Pats crushed Pittsburgh and they weren’t even healthy. According to the New England website, when it comes to Sunday’s matchup,

“New England was without star WR A.J. Brown and starting CB Carlton Davis III, then lost several players to injury during the game: RG Mike Onwenu (ankle), TE Eli Raridon (thigh), OLB Dre’Mont Jones (shoulder), S Dell Pettus (ankle), and S Craig Woodson (shoulder) all suffered injuries during Sunday’s win.”

On Monday, the media got a chance to ask coach Mike McCarthy what might be the issue for the Steelers loss. Mike McCarthy said he saw this coming from offensive struggles in practice.

However, he’s still somewhat optimistic that his team can get on track. Mike told the media, “There’s always a lot to like on the film, that’s been consistent in my career … it’s never as bad as you think, never as good as you think. We’ve got to clean up our own house a little bit.”
