The franchise finally addressed a major one over the weekend. The Clippers name Los Angeles-based lawyer John Gibson as interim Governor and CEO. With more than 35 years of experience, John has advised and represented major corporations, technology and health care companies, professional sports organizations, and business leaders on complex legal and business matters.
This decision on the part of Los Angeles makes perfect sense. It is a choice involving an individual who has been there from the very beginning of the Ballmer era with the Clippers. John Gibson is the lawyer who assisted Steve Ballmer in purchasing the LA Clippers after the NBA banned Sterling.
ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the news regarding John Gibson taking over Governor and CEO duties for the Clippers organization. Charania reveals,
“The Clippers have named accomplished Los Angeles-based lawyer John Gibson as the franchise’s interim Governor and CEO, per source. Steve Ballmer nominated Gibson and the NBA approved him.”

In 2025, John Gibson was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyer. Considered to be the top 1% of trial lawyers in the country. His numerous honors include recognition by The Best Lawyers in America, the National Top 100 Black Lawyers, and membership in the Cosmos Club for “persons of scholarship, creative genius, or intellectual distinction.”
Gibson, a long-time Clippers season ticket holder, is a graduate of Harvard University. Where he was a John Harvard Scholar, and the University of Michigan Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review.
