Seattle Seahawks Sold for $9.612 Billion is a Record Sale for an NFL Franchise

They are fresh off a return to the Super Bowl and a victory. We’ve known since the death of former owner Paul Allen that the team would be sold. Now that expectation has finally come to fruition for the franchise. According to a post from Adam Schefter the Seattle Seahawks sold for $9.612 is a record sale for an NFL franchise. The purchasing group is led by San Francisco 49ers limited partner Vinod Khosla. Backing up this post is the estate of Paul G. Allen. They announced yesterday that it has entered into a formal sale agreement with an ownership group led by the Khosla family.

“We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere,” said Vinod Khosla, on behalf of the Khosla family.

However, there is still work to be done as outlined in a memo sent to all NFL teams. And the Khosla family will have to divest their interest in the San Francisco 49ers. Below are some snippets from the memo:

“The Khosla family currently owns a limited partner interest in the San Francisco 49ers and would be required to divest that interest. The Khosla family includes Neeru Khosla, who would serve as the controlling owner, Vinod Khosla, and their son Neal Khosla. Neal would be expected to have a significant leadership role in the ownership group. We have also commenced both review of key transaction documents and customary due diligence on the prospective ownership group. As this work progresses, we will report to the Finance Committee, which will review the transaction in advance of the membership’s consideration.”

Seattle Seahawks Sold for $9.612 Billion is a Record Sale for an NFL Franchise

The Seahawks were purchased by Paul Allen in 1997 for $194 million. Almost 30 years later they’re being sold for $9.612 billion. Prior to this sale the Washington Commanders were sold for $6.05 billion in July 2023. A record sum at the time for a North American sports franchise. But apparently the Khosla group told the Harris group, “Hold my beer.”

It takes groups, partnerships and alliances to get into the game. There’s no doubt that the sports industry is a cash hog that keeps on giving. Gambling on sports continues to grow exponentially which will only serve to enrich the already wealthy. In America, we love playing and watching all types of sports. But with so much money involved will sports remain a harmless pastime or become something much more sinister? We sincerely hope for the former.
