San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Involved in Serious Car Accident
Being a head coach in the NFL is a tough job. But it’s even more difficult when you have been caught up in a fender bender. That’s what happened to one man near his home in the Los Altos area. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a serious car accident that left him injured. ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on the incident, stating:
“Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed over 40 stiches in his face and suffered a severe concussion during a July 14 car accident when he collided with an SUV near his northern California home, per me and @nwagoner.”
“49ers assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster is expected to assume some of Kyle Shanahan’s head coaching duties and help lead the team. Shanahan informed his assistant coaches of his accident on Tuesday; other players slowly have been getting the news that the 49ers confirmed today.”
The San Francisco 49ers also released their own statement regarding the coach’s accident:
“San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.
Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period.”

This isn’t the kind of news a team wants to hear so close to the start of the 2026 season. However, it appears that Shanahan will recover based on 49ers general manager John Lynch. In his press conference this morning, Lynch said, “I think the expectation is that long before that [Week 1 vs. Rams], he’ll be better. But again, everybody responds to these things differently, and you know, we’re going to do whatever it takes to have him right when he comes back.”
The game against the Rams will take place on Sept. 10 in Melbourne, Australia. That’s a long way to travel when you’re feeling just fine. Therefore, it’s hoped that Shanahan’s injuries will be healed enough for the long trip not to be a burden on him. And speaking of the Rams, their head coach Sean McVay expressed his sympathy.
Rams HC Sean McVay spoke about 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan after his accident. “Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is okay. But most importantly, I have talked to him. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and I know he’s got an incredible perspective on it all. Kyle’s a stud. I have as much respect for him as anybody and he’s a friend of mine, and I love him and hope that he’s going to have a great recovery.”
We sincerely hope coach Shanahan makes a speedy and healthy recovery.
