Arizona Cardinals and Jacoby Brissett Reached Agreement on a Raise for the Quarterback

He got his NFL start when he was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. That was the same year that the league had suspended the best quarterback in the league, Tom Brady. You remember the made-up controversy of deflated footballs, right? Well because of that, both Jimmy Garoppalo and Jacoby Brissett got to be starting quarterbacks and became nationally known entities. Nevertheless, Brissett went on to play for other teams. Now the Arizona Cardinals and Jacoby Brissett have reached an agreement on a raise for the quarterback.

Although Brissett didn’t get more time on his contract he did receive more money. Supplying details about the deal, NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted the following:

“Arizona and QB Jacoby Brissett, who skipped most of the team’s off-season program as he requested a new deal, reached agreement today on a reworked contract. Brissett was in the second year of a two-year deal that was scheduled to pay him $4.88 million in base salary.

Term update: Jacoby Brissett will sign a one-year, $15.5 million guaranteed deal worth up to $21 million with incentives, per source.”

Schefter added that since no additional years were added to his contract, Brissett will become a free agent after the 2026 season. Head coach Mike LaFleur confirmed the new contract. During a press conference today LaFleur said, “I’m happy for him, I’m happy for our team.” And he disclosed that Brissett would work with the starters beginning Tuesday, when the pads go on for the first time. Interestingly, he stopped short of committing to Brissett starting Week 1.

In addition, to Brissett the Cardinals have rookie and veteran Gardner Minshew II who has been taking first-team reps with Brissett out. It was noted that Brissett’s varied experience is a benefit for the team:

“He’s got that veteran presence,” offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said. “You know, when you first get the rookies, they don’t know what’s going on, so I think that just the conversations, the things that (Jacoby) has gone through, just understanding the football, different systems he’s been in, I think all those things help him with us, and you see that growth and just his wisdom.”

For now, Brissett has been practicing but has yet to participate in an 11-on-11 work. One intriguing aspect about Brissett is that he negotiated his rookie contracts and this new one. At any rate, Brissett has spent time with multiple teams including the Patriots, Colts, Browns, Commanders and a second stint with the Patriots. The question now is will he remain with the Cardinals after this season, latch on with another team or retire.
