Pittsburgh Steelers secure Edge Rusher Nick Herbig with New Contract Extension
Pittsburgh has always been known for having rough and ready defenses. From the Steel Curtain of the seventies down to the present day. And they have kept that legacy alive signing important defensive pieces to the team. Today they kept the streak alive. The Pittsburgh Steelers secured edge rusher Nick Herbig with a new contract extension. He was entering the last year of his rookie contract. The news was reported by NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo and ESPN’s Adam Schefter today.
According to the two NFL Insiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the linebacker have agreed on a four-year, $100 million contract extension that includes $42 million guaranteed. Herbig was selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He played college football for the Wisconsin Badgers where he became a top playmaker. And he has done the same in his professional career which is why the Steelers understood the need to lock him down for the future.
He has a career-high 7.5 sacks while producing 30 tackles (13 for loss), three forced fumbles, three passes defensed and his first career interception. His new contract rate puts him just outside the top 15 annual average salaries for edge rushers in the NFL. So, general manager Omar Khan was right to get him signed now for what could be termed a reasonable price. Particularly, since they already have T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith under contract.
By signing Herbig along with those two, the Steelers have dedicated $83 million per year to the three rushers. Only the Houston Texans have a bigger bill having signed Will Anderson, Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

Herbig is only 24 years old, whereas T.J. Watt is 31. So, signing Herbig will allow the Steelers to keep their pass rushing front youthful and aggressive. He had a career high of 7.5 sacks in 2025 along with 45 quarterback pressures. His quarterback pressure rate was 13.7%.
Over his career he’s had 77 total tackles, 15 sacks, 9 forced fumbles and 4 fumble recoveries. And in 2025 he had his first career interception. On a personal note, Herbig is of partial Japanese, Okinawan, and Native Hawaiian descent. His brother, Nate Herbig, formerly played offensive guard in the NFL. So, congratulations to Nick Herbig on securing his contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers!
