Spurs Expected to Sign Victor Wembanyama to 5-year $251M Max Rookie Extension
When your core is basically all under 25, appeared in the postseason for the first time and are now in the NBA Finals; you KEEP THEM TOGETHER. First step in accomplishing this for the Spurs is by preventing their superstar from going anywhere. Therefore, the San Antonio Spurs are expected to sign Victor Wembanyama to a 5-year $251M max rookie extension this offseason. This would be the 2nd LARGEST contract in NBA history behind only Jayson Tatum ($316M).
Nonetheless, Wemby has earned this future extension. He’s headed to his first NBA Finals to face off against New York and he is only 22-years old. This year’s Finals is a rematch for a number of reasons and a lot is at stake.
The Knicks are returning to the Finals for the first time since 1999 and they seek their first championship in 53 years. San Antonio returns for the first time since 2014 and are seeking their 6th title in franchise history. From these two franchises meeting in the 1999 NBA Finals to the 2025 Emirates NBA Cup Championship… the Knicks and Spurs will now play for the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2026.
A big reason for the Spurs success in recent seasons has been due to Wemby. When he’s on the court he is a true difference maker. According to CBS Sports stats, San Antonio struggles when Wemby subs out. Through Game 3 versus OKC, Spurs were +21 with Victor on the court and -39 with him off the court. For this reason and more, Wemby stands to get PAID.
However, actually Victor stands to make even more than $251 million soon. And these are not just pull them out of the hat numbers as well. As long as Victor stays healthy and plays most games this lucrative contract should be a lock.
This new deal would no doubt include Derrick Rose Rule language that could push its total value to roughly over $300 million if Wembanyama earns All-NBA, MVP, or Defensive Player of the Year in
2026-27. He becomes eligible to sign on July 6, the day after free-agency opens. As Sportrac confirms,
“The [San Antonio] Spurs are eligible to sign Victor Wembanyama to a maximum rookie extension this summer that projects to start at 5-years, $251M with “super-max” language that can increase the deal to as much as $301M. Such (figures based on a 173.25M salary cap for 2027-28).”
Spurs Expected to Sign Victor Wembanyama to 5-year $251M Max Rookie Extension
Victor Wembanyama would definitely be worth every cent. He has proven to be quite the leader at his young age and is effective on both sides of the ball. During the 2026 season, Wembanyama posted stellar numbers leading the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals which begins Wednesday. During the regular season, he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. In his 2026 playoff run, he is averaging 23.2 points and 10.8 rebounds over 17 games.
Additionally, Victor Wembanyama was also named the 2025-26 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Making history as the first unanimous winner in the award’s existence, receiving all 100 first-place votes. At 22 years old, the San Antonio Spurs phenom is also the youngest player to ever win the award. So then, it makes perfect sense why San Antonio is about to show Wemby the money.
