Payton Pritchard Agrees to 2-year $44.2M Extension With Boston Celtics
Boston gets another great deal done. Plus, wraps up negotiations one week before the start of the NBA season. On Tuesday afternoon it was confirmed that Payton Pritchard has agreed to a 2-year, $44.2M extension with the Boston Celtics.
This extension comes on the heels of a high performance season for Pritchard. For instance, Payton Pritchard last season (2025-2026):
17.0 PPG (career-high)
5.2 APG (career-high)
3.9 RPG (career-high)
27 20-point games (career-high)
6 30-point games (career-high)
1 40-point game (t-career-high)
After such production, Boston decided to lock Payton in for awhile longer. Pritchard’s deal also continues a trend of Boston locking up players they consider to be long-term core players before they get to free agency: Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Robert Williams, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Neemias Queta and Jordan Walsh earlier this offseason.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on the Payton Pritchard extension with Celtics. He stated,
“Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension, plus a mutual option in the 2029-30 season, CAA Co-Head of Basketball Austin Brown and agent Max Saidman tell ESPN.
Pritchard — the 2024 NBA champion and 2025 Sixth Man of the Year — cashes in on a fully guaranteed two-year max extension to keep him a key long-term member of the retooled Celtics after the 6-1 guard averaged career highs in points (17), assists (5.2) and rebounds (3.9).”

Spotrac’s Keith Smith provided a little more detail regarding Payton’s deal. Smith adds,
“Given Payton Pritchard had two years left on his deal, I’m a little surprised an extension happened now vs next offseason. The $22M AAV shows how Boston values Pritchard as an important part of their rotation. He should return positive value on that contract without any doubt.
Payton Pritchard is extending via the Estimated Average Player Salary (EAPS). Because his current contract is less than EAPS, Prichard is eligible to extend for 140% of EAPS with 8% raises. That should look like this for Pritchard:
28-29: $21.2M
29-30: $22.9M (mutual option).”
You may keep noticing “mutual option” being mentioned. This means that either side can opt in and the player is under contract. For example— Pritchard picks up the option: Pritchard stays. Boston picks up the option: Pritchard stays. Neither picks up the option: Pritchard is a free agent.
