One of the Raiders’ Greats Two-Time Super Bowl Winner Rod Martin Has Passed Away

He helped to define the Silver and Black attack. He was a big part of the Raiders defensive wall that made offenses pay. You could count on him to make the big tackles in the big moments of the game, and he was an interception machine too. So it is with deep grievance that we write that one of the Raiders’ greats, two-time Super Bowl winner Rod Martin has passed away. He was 72 years old and no cause of death has been given yet.

He rose up high after being drafted in the 12th round by the Raiders out of USC in 1977. Martin played in 165 games with 147 starts in 12 NFL seasons, all with the Raiders. Twice he was selected to the Pro Bowl and named All-Pro twice garnering first-team honors in 1984. He really made his mark in Super Bowl XV when he set a Super Bowl record that still remains. He came up with three interceptions in the Raiders’ 27-10 victory over the Eagles. Three years later, he recorded a sack and fumble recovery as the Raiders defeated Washington in Super Bowl XVIII, 38-9.

The Raiders organization also described him as, “A beloved member of the Raiders Family and a favorite of Raiders fans everywhere, the deepest condolences of the entire Raider Nation are with Rod’s family at this time.

Martin played along with some of the greatest Raiders such as Todd Christensen, Howie Long, Lester Hayes, Jim Plunkett and Marcus Allen. They helped to grow the legend of the “Bad Boys” reputation on both sides of the ball.

Martin was well-liked and respected by his teammates. So, it’s not surprising that former Raider running back Kenny King had this to say:

“Rest in peace to Rod Martin, a true Raiders legend and 2x Super Bowl champion. Anyone who ever crossed paths with Rod knows it wasn’t just about what he did on the field. He lit up every room he walked into. That smile, that energy, that presence… you felt it immediately. It was real, it was genuine, and it stuck with you. An incredible man, a proud Raider, and a great uncle who meant more than words can really capture. You will be missed dearly. Raider Nation lost a special one.”

Those words summarize how Martin fans felt about the man. The expression, ‘they don’t make them like that anymore’ can definitely be said in Martin’s case. Certainly, the Raiders would like to get back to the “glory days” that guys like Martin helped to create. Rest in peace Rod.
