Former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin Set to Join NBC Football Night In America this Season
He was hired to be their head coach after having spent one year as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. Head coach at the time Brad Childress had hired Tomlin to be his defensive coordinator in 2006. Prior to that Tomlin had spent 2001-2005 as the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yet after one year as a defensive coordinator the Pittsburgh Steelers tapped Tomlin to be their 16th head coach. After a 19-year career there he chose to step down after last season. Now the former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is set to join NBC Football Night in America this season.
While Tomlin was with the Steelers, he put together an enviable career. In 19 seasons he never finished with a losing record, the longest streak in NFL history. When he resigned, he was the longest tenured head coach in the NFL. He led the Steelers to 13 playoff appearances, eight division titles, three AFC Championship games, two Super Bowl appearances and won Super Bowl XLIII. At the time he was the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl at age 36. He tied former head coach Chuck Knoll for the most regular-season wins in Steelers franchise history.
According to Mike Florio, himself a member of NBC Football Night in America, Tony Dungy will not be returning. And that NBC has made no announcements regarding other possible changes. He claims that NBC doesn’t tell him anything, but he still believes Tomlin will be great for the show. He described Tomlin as ‘master communicator, with a long list of catchphrases.’ Which we have to agree is an accurate description.

We have to wonder how long this television job will last. Will Tomlin get the coaching bug itch and return to the NFL sidelines? Or will television be his new career path? Quite frankly, we could see it going either way. Tomlin had the respect and admiration of the players he coached. And evidently it was a job he loved to do.
However, will the bright lights of the camera studio hold an appeal for him? He’ll be able to use his unique way with words to reach audiences across the country. Sharing witty remarks and addictive catchphrases that the rest of us will repeat. Whichever venue he will stick with in the long run will be a good choice. He is well-suited for either avenue. Welcome back coach Tomlin and congratulations on your new gig with NBC!
