New York Rangers Goaltender Igor Shesterkin Will Miss the Remainder of the Season

Not the way any team wants to start a season. Not even two weeks in and already tackling and juggling multiple injuries. New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a lower-body injury in last night’s game against the Washington Capitals. Shesterkin had stopped 13 of 14 shots before leaving the game. He was replaced by Dylan Garand, who made 11 saves.

During the second period Igor Shesterkin suffered a lower-body injury after jamming his leg into the post. He appeared to injure his right leg at 8:20 of the second period when his skate jammed into the goalpost while scrambling back into his net. Then, his right leg bent awkwardly under him as he fell in the crease. Igor Shesterkin was forced to leave the game. Moreover, he did not put weight on his right leg as he left the ice. Just a brutal blow for the Rangers and no update was immediately available postgame.

However, Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said of Shesterkin after the game,

“He’s a big part of this team, without a doubt. I’ve said it on so many different occasions: He’s amongst the best goalies in the world, if not the best. He’s that good.”

Nevertheless, finally on Saturday morning Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman provided intel on Igor. He reports,

“Really bad news: Igor Shesterkin is out for the year. The Rangers have also announced that Joonas Korpisalo is out another 4 weeks. Joe Veleno 3 months.”

While it was hoped Igor’s injury would turn out not to be as bad; unfortunately, the worst-case scenario has been confirmed. Shesterkin had led the team to a promising 4-1-0 start, but will now miss the remainder of the season. And the Rangers are now turning to the next man up.

The Athletic’s Peter Baugh reveals, “New York is expected to be without veteran backup Joonas Korpisalo for four more weeks due to his own lower-body injury, leaving 24-year-old Dylan Garand as the starter for the time being. Veteran Spencer Martin has been cleared from a recent lower-body injury and is expected to be recalled from AHL Hartford as New York’s new No. 2 goalie, according to a source who spoke anonymously to discuss pending transactions.”
