Los Angeles Chargers and Safety Derwin James Have Agreed to Multi-Year Extension

At 29 years old, he was entering the final year of his contract. He has been consistent and reliable on the defensive side of the ball since he has been with the team. Beginning with his rookie year he has been a reliable contributor to the team which resulted in him being an annual team captain. Therefore, the team has once again shown how much they value him. The Los Angeles Chargers and safety Derwin James have agreed to a multi-year extension.

The news was first reported by NFL Insider ESPN reporter Adam Schefter:

“The Chargers and Derwin James Jr. agreed to a three-year, $75.6 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid safety for the second time in his career, his agent David Mulugheta told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

The deal includes $57.5 million guaranteed.”

It’s no small feat that James Jr. has earned his second contract with the Chargers. It explains why Chargers’ head coach referred to him as, “one of the most “incredible” players he’s ever coached. With this new deal he has reset the market at $25.2 million per year. That passes the record contract Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton signed in 2025.

He joined the Los Angeles Chargers as the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. In his rookie year he was named a first-team All-Pro. He has been a five-time Pro Bowler, a one-time first-team All-Pro and a four-time second-team All-Pro. Thanks to his versatility he can line up just about anywhere on the field. Due to that he has become seen as one of the top overall safeties in the league.

In speaking to ESPN TV Personality Pat McAfee, James said he was blessed and was looking forward to showing why he had received the new deal. After having a down year in 2023, he surged under defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. He blew up running plays and totaled 7.5 sacks over the past two seasons, the most productive two-year pass-rushing stretch of his career.

It goes without saying that James is excited to get back out on the field for the 2026 season. Now that Minter has been hired as the Baltimore Ravens new head coach, we’ll see how James fares with the new defensive coordinator. Chris O’Leary will work to maintain what Minter created, one of the stingiest defenses in the league. But at least he knows Derwin James Jr, will still be a part of the mix. Congratulations to James on his latest contract extension!
