Spurs Victor Wembanyama Has Been Warned For Violating Media Access Rules

It has been a tough postseason that has tested every fiber of the 22-year-old star. And Tuesday night San Antonio’s big man did something extremely out of character; surprising various members of the press after a Game 5 loss. The following morning he is now being issued a warning regarding his recent actions. The Spurs Victor Wembanyama has been warned for violating media access rules.

Victor’s decision not to speak with reporters is not his usual reaction after games. In fact, he is well-known and lauded for always being available to media. Plus, willing to answer any and all questions. He’s been so good about speaking with the press that Wemby was awarded just this season for the respectful attention he’s shown for media.

Wembanyama has secured two major media-voted honors for the 2025-26 NBA season. The NBA Defensive Player of the Year and the Professional Basketball Writers Association’s Magic Johnson Award. In April 2026, Wembanyama won the PBWA’s Magic Johnson Award, which is given to the player who best combines on-court excellence with cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans. He was recognized as a media favorite for being consistently thoughtful and engaging during press sessions. Wembanyama is the first Spur to win the award and, at age 22, the youngest honoree since Kevin Durant(also 22) in 2011.

Wembanyama Receives PBWA’s Media Accolade

Furthermore, at the time of recognizing Wemby with the Magic Johnson Award, PBWA president Howard Beck had stated why Victor had been a clear choice. Beck mentioned,

“Victor Wembanyama thoroughly embodies the spirit of this award – as a superstar who is just as thoughtful and engaging off the court as he is dominant on the court. He is giving of himself, amiable and patient with reporters, and eager to discuss just about any subject – from the MVP race to social justice to the Northern Lights. As one of our members put it, Victor is ‘a deep thinker who understands the power of his words.’

Even with the immense spotlight and expectations he faces daily, Victor consistently approaches his interviews with enthusiasm and a sense of humor. The day before he was drafted in 2023, Victor said his goal was to be the best in ‘all dimensions of the job,’ including ‘the best at the media, the press conference stuff.’ As he has on the court, he has more than lived up to his promise.”

However, after the Spurs’ 127-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder that put San Antonio in a 3-2 deficit in the Western Conference finals, a team spokesperson said Wembanyama would be unavailable to speak to reporters. The spokesperson made the announcement about an hour after Spurs coach Mitch Johnson addressed the loss.

In the past the NBA has levied fines to players who did not make themselves available to the media after playoff games. In 2023, both Jimmy Butler and Dillon Brooks received $25,000 fines for not speaking to reporters. Nonetheless, the league has not gone to such lengths with Wembanyama after Tuesday evening’s incident. Victor was notified not to repeat his behavior.

As ESPN’s Shams Charania reports, “The NBA has warned the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama for violating media access rules. Wembanyama bypassed media obligations after Game 5 on Tuesday night.”
